Introduction to Nutrition Response Testing

Imagine having a diagnostic instrument which could tell you immediately what is wrong with the body when it is ill, without expensive and time consuming medical testing. For that matter, what if that instrument could tell you the health status of the body at any time? But wait! What if that instrument could sort through all of the symptoms and signals the body is sending you regarding its dysfunction and tell you the most important area or organ that needs to be handled first. And what if that instrument could then tell you what is causing the malfunction of that organ? And what if that instrument could identify the foods and natural substances found in nature which could be used to feed the body so it could heal on its own instead of having to rely on poisons to simply cover up the symptoms? And what if that instrument is so sensitive that it could tell you how much the body needs of the things necessary for healing? Does this sound too good to be true?

What if I were to tell you that such an instrument is available to everyone, or better yet, that everyone already has that instrument if he is a living breathing organism? Does that sound too good to be true? What I am talking about has been available since life first began because it is part of the life force itself. It has been named many things, is a part of every culture, and has been used by many different cultures in various ways to better understand, harness, and utilize its healing qualities.

What I am talking about is the inborn ability of the body to heal itself. It is written into the genetic code of all living things, and is essential for the survival of all living things. Without it life could not exist. It is supernatural simply because it violates the known physical laws of the universe. Those laws are all in harmony because they support a decaying, deteriorating universe and not a viable, growing, dynamic, ever-expanding one. The principle of life and living things alone is capable of growing and reproducing because of it. It is often referred to as Universal Intelligence.

Before you start to think that I have gone off the deep end, please stay with me just a little longer. I wish to show you how the principle I have now introduced to you applies to human health. Simply stated, universal intelligence is the body’s ability to heal itself. Although it is not limited to this one activity, this area of health and healing and the part that universal intelligence plays in it is my focus as a natural healing arts practitioner. One can use a lot of complicated terminology to describe how the healing process occurs, but it is impossible to explain why it happens without embracing this principle as something beyond our understanding. Whatever name we may give it, whether we ascribe it to part of the genetic code, or natural life force … whether we call it innate intelligence, chi, karma, chakra, etc… it is an essential part of all living things.

But it is of little use to our educated intelligence if we do not know how to use it. Nutrition Response Testing bridges that gap and provides us with a tool to “read” the body’s innate intelligence. In short Nutrition Response Testing is the procedure manual for the use of this incredible tool. It is the means by which one’s educated intelligence is able to communicate with innate intelligence. This was foreseen by D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic in 1914. He said, “When educated intelligence is able to communicate with innate intelligence (a possibility which the not too distant future may disclose) we shall be able to make a correct diagnoses.”

So … what exactly is it, and what does it do?

Nutrition Response Testing is a system of “muscle testing” that derives its information directly from a person’s autonomic nervous system. This system of evaluation and treatment was first developed as “Autonomic Response Testing” by Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD, a German-trained physician and, Louisa Williams, MS, DC, ND, and later modified into Nutrition Response Testing by Fred Ulan, DC. Both are easier and more direct to use than their predecessor called Applied Kinesiology. Much of the credit for Nutrition Response Testing does not go to Dr. Ulan although it was his genius which developed this efficient, all-encompassing system. He would be the first to tell you that it was the genius of many others from whom he borrowed bits and pieces of knowledge that helped him to come up with his system. But without his never ending pursuit of over 30 years of scrutiny, trial and error testing and sacrifice- his joyful obligation as he calls it- Nutrition Response Testing- would not now be the effective tool it is today.
Nutrition Response Testing is a non-invasive system of analyzing the body to determine the underlying causes of ill or non-optimum health. It is a proven system that may be quite different from any other healing practice that you may have experienced. Energy flow exists between all parts and organs of the body, and is easily discerned with this testing, providing all of the information and feedback needed to assess and treat an individual. The extraordinary properties of the human cells and tissues are used to bring about healing and health changes … exactly as Nature intended. The body responds to the procedure reliably and consistently. And the feedback provided is so precise that it opens the door to a safe and lasting recovery, even in many cases where everything else has failed.
But how does this work? In Nutrition Response Testing, the body’s neurological reflexes are tested. These reflexes are the body’s way of telling the doctor how one’s nervous system is doing-as it is the nervous system’s responsibility to regulate the body’s function for each and every organ. The testing includes organs, glands, joints, muscles, etc. These reflexes are tested on the surface of the body and the findings are analyzed.
The practitioner will do the analysis by contacting the individuals extended arm with one hand, which acts as a biofeedback monitor, and contacting the specific reflex area with his other hand. If a tested reflex is stressed, exerting a slight pressure directly on the skin overlying that gland or organ will cause the nervous system to respond by reducing energy to the extended arm which will then weaken and drop. This indicates underlying stress or dysfunction in that gland or organ which can affect a patient’s health. If completely healthy, the arm being tested will remain strong throughout the testing procedure. It really is that simple.

A unique characteristic of Nutrition Response Testing is that the body will always tell the practitioner exactly what needs to be addressed first. To illustrate this, I like to use the analogy of the onion. Let’s say that the practitioner finds several reflexes that are weak in his initial testing of a particular patient. After all of the problem areas are identified, a priority-testing mode is used to identify which weakness is currently of primary importance. The next step is to see if the weakness is being caused or aggravated by any of five common stress factors, either singly or in combination. These stressors are: major food allergies, heavy metals toxicity, chemical toxicity, chronic unresolved infections, and scars. If the stress factors are not addressed first, treatment of the target tissues will help, but will never totally succeed because these stressors are most often the root cause of the problem. The concept of finding and treating the stressors is exclusive to the Nutrition Response Testing procedure, which sets it apart from basic Applied Kinesiology. In actuality, there are many such aspects of this procedure which will be explored later, that further demonstrate its superiority over any other system presently in use. This makes Nutrition Response Testing the standard for evaluating and treating health conditions in the alternative healthcare arena, as well as in mainstream medical circles.

Now, let’s say that the priority on this patient shows up as a thyroid weakness due to mercury toxicity, which is also causing a low-grade, chronic viral condition. The practitioner then continues using the testing procedure to find the correct diet and supplement program to handle these issues. This, according to our analogy, would be considered the first layer of the onion.

After this first layer has been treated for a few weeks, re-testing might indicate that the thyroid is now strong, but a liver weakness is now of primary concern. Let’s say that there is also a component of mercury toxicity within the liver, but the viral condition has been cleared.

This process of testing, re-testing, finding new layers of issues, and fine-tuning the patient’s program continues until the body indicates that all layers have been addressed … or, until the patient is as close to ideal health as humanly possible. At that point, a maintenance program is decided upon.

Because the body is designed to heal itself, provided it has the necessary ingredients, the importance of proper nutrition, is the key essential to the success of this system of analysis and treatment. Dr. Ulan has discovered that the body will respond extremely well to a treatment regimen consisting mostly of whole food nutritional supplements, along with any indicated botanical remedies, essential fatty acids, homeopathic drainage remedies, and specific dietary recommendations. Although every case is different, we often hear enthusiastic reports from patients in as little as 4-6 weeks. The fastest recoveries are often from those who have most closely adhered to their recommended nutritional program.
Nutrition Response Testing has often been found to be effective when other conventional and alternative treatments have failed, and may be considered for virtually all illnesses, both acute and chronic degenerative conditions, including patients with chronic health problems. Some examples of conditions that can be successfully treated with Nutrition Response Testing are headaches, chronic fatigue, excessive weight, depression, digestive problems, constipation, Crohn’s disease, acid reflux, high blood pressure, diabetes, fibromyalgia … the list can go on and on!
Nutrition Response Testing is truly a comprehensive testing procedure.
The above is just the basic outline on Nutrition Response Testing. The next several chapters are devoted to a more detailed explanation of the mechanics of Nutrition Response Testing as we focus on each of the steps of the procedure more closely.

These steps are as follows:
Determine that a muscle will lock
Calibration of the individual tested
Checking for ANS regulation
Checking for neurogenic switching
Doing a body scan
Finding the priority organ which needs to be addressed
Checking for the common stressors
Finding the nutrition to handle the common stressors
Determining if any other nutrition is needed
Doing the final checks
Digestive points
Allergy point
Regulation check

This is the basic pattern upon which the system is built. But there is more to learn about the more advanced portions of the procedure. These advanced features are learned in the immediate and advanced clinical courses which teach complete mastery of this system so that the practitioner will be able to give the body necessary nutritional support for any condition presented.

I hope your interest has been sufficiently peaked by this introduction to Nutrition Response Testing, so that you will look over the above outline and use the links provided to continue learning about this unique and extremely effective tool.
